Health is the positive physical and mental state that enables everything else, from personal joy to professional success and rewarding relationships.

As physical beings, we are surrounded by things that affect our health — sometimes in small measure, sometimes in great magnitude. Our best protection against an expanding universe of factors that influence health, is a proactive habit of good nutrition which, thank goodness, can be delicious and stimulating.

Good health and balanced nutrition partner with fitness in what I call the Wellness Triad. Fitness — through training or regular exercise — endows us with the capacity to perform with stamina and strength. Its rewards are readiness, balance, soundness of mind and body, and usually a good night's sleep. In challenging times, fitness is fundamental to survival and success.

Just as health goes far beyond an annual check-up and nutrition is more than turning down a piece of pie, fitness goes well beyond a visit to the gym or a jog with the dog, The discipline of fitness forms the framework for the resilience, and ultimately resilience is the greatest of all survival skills and success traits. The act of exercise trains the body for the act of endurance in overcoming obstacles such as fatigue and self-doubt. It teaches both the mind and the temperament to focus with resolve, to move past temptations and distractions, and to direct energy into solutions rather than problems.

Health, nutrition and fitness combine into an antidote for confusion and a preventative for fear. They are as much a state of spirit, and a declaration of intent, as they are the condition of the body. The tools we use to achieve them — tools such as time, energy, exercise and fuel — are components that deserve our attention but on a higher level the Wellness Triad is not about these things. It is about maintaining a state where the best of yourself always leads the rest of yourself.

My mission is to show others how to achieve that state.
